Jennifer Garner is a West Virginia native who was born in Houston on 17 April 1972. William John Garner worked as a chemist for Union Carbide. Her mother Patricia Ann taught at a local college. She received her degree in chemical engineering to emulate her father. In order to be an actress she went on a trip to New York. The restaurant she worked in was as well as appearing in Broadway plays. She was in a minor part in the film "Felicity" (where she first encountered Scott Foley). Garner made her debut in Alias, an action thriller. Her first big part was in the acclaimed romantic comedy 13 Going on 30. In it she played the teenage girl trapped in a thirtyplus year old's body. Garner decided to hire Gary Winick (director) to make the movie. Together, they looked for new projects to do before Winick's passing in 2011. Garner was awarded the title the artist ambassador in 2009 by Save the Children U.S.A. This role entails promoting nutritional literacy, education and early childhood education. Garner is a board member as the group's president since 2014, has been an advocate of early education. In her role as an ambassador, Garner visits often with families who participate in Early Steps to School Success which is a program designed to guide parents in how to assist youngsters in their learning.
